Symi is a small Greek island in the Dodecanese island chain. It is mountainous, rocky, and boasts a beautiful harbour town of neoclassical houses.
In order to travel to Symi we took a ferry from the neighbouring island of Rhodes. The trip took around 2 and a half hours. The ferry took us straight into the main harbour town of Yialos.
The harbour features many restaurants and cafes. Mostly set up to handle the many day visitors who come via ferry from Rhodes. In the smaller side streets you will find the supermarkets and workshops which the locals frequent.
From the harbour, you can walk up the the over 400 steps of the Kali Strata to the town of Chorio. Here you will find a maze of streets and passageways some only wide enough for walking through.
Situated in a adjacent cove from the main Harbour, Pedi Bay is roughly a thirty minute walk from the top of Chorio. It is a small fishing village and it is surrounded by rocky hills giving the town a bleak colour palette with a martian feel.
We trekked across the roughly 3.5km wide island to reach a small secluded beach on the Western side of Symi. The trek was difficult but the views were amazing once we reached our destination.
On the southern end of Symi is the monastery of Panormitis. We got there after a bus ride through the mountainous centre of the island and then down a hair raising steep decent down to sea level.
Our adventure on Symi lasted a short six days, but during that time I felt completely relaxed and had embraced the quiet lifestyle of the island.
